Tianyi Cheng Honored as 2025 China Self-Improvement College Student

Recently, the recipients of the 2025 “China Self-Improvement College Student” scholarship were announced. Tianyi Cheng, a master’s student from the School of Information Science and Engineering, ECUST, received this national honor.

Tianyi Cheng majors in Control Science and Engineering. He serves on the Presidium of the ECUST Graduate Student Union. He previously headed the university’s 26th Postgraduate Volunteer Teaching Group, worked with Xiaohuali New Media Studio, and was President of the University Football Association.

He has received numerous honors, including the Outstanding Volunteer in the 2024-2025 China College Student Volunteer Service Program for Western China, Outstanding Graduate of Shanghai, Model Volunteer of ECUST, Outstanding Student Leader.

He volunteered for four consecutive China International Import Expos. Evolving from a rookie volunteer into a core team member, he undertook foreign language translation, cultural exchange and volunteer management work. His stories have been covered by major media outlets including Guangming Daily.

In July 2024, he spent a year volunteering as a science and IT teacher at Rende No.1 Primary School in Xundian, Yunnan Province. He developed a special “Virtual Tour of the CIIE” course and used intelligent robots to spark rural children’s interest in science. He refereed school football matches to teach young players competition rules, guiding the children to understand referee signals and the spirit of teamwork.

On campus, he built comprehensive capabilities through student leadership. He managed new media coverage for major university events, built a platform for campus football competitions, and improved campus services by meeting postgraduates’ needs. From a CIIE volunteer to a dream builder in rural education, Tianyi Cheng embodied youth responsibility through volunteer service, rural teaching and student leadership work.

The “China Self-Improvement College Student” selection is held annually. ECUST has since celebrated 10 recipients of this honor. ECUST will continue to set this role model as an inspiration, encouraging the youth to contribute to scientific innovation, rural revitalization and social services.
